Abstract
The congenital choanal atresia is an uncommon disorder which is the foremost cause of serious airway compromise resulting from congenital nasal obstructions. Congenital choanal atresia can be accompanied with multiple anomalies of unknown
etiology,
which is proposed as CHARGE association by Pagon et al. Although many cases of associated cardiac anomalies have been reported, multiple cardiac anomalies are not common.
We experienced a case of bilateral choanal atresia associated with multiple cardiac anomalies, which are ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect and mild hypoplastic aorta. The diagnosis of obstruction was confirmed by catheter test,
contrast
nasopharyngogram and nasal bone CT scan, and additional cardiac anomalies were studied with 2-D and Doppler echocardiography. The operation was done by transnasal approach. His clinical condition was improved after operation, however, he died of
congestive heart failure on postoperation 3 days.
We report a case of bilateral congenital choanal atresia associated with multiple cardiac anomalies treated with nasal stent insertion by transnasal approach.
